As a tireless and insatiable traveler through various musical worlds, Samuel BERTHOD has forged a unique profile among concert clarinettists, approaching with equal happiness fields as diverse as those of classical music, contemporary music, jazz, klezmer & Balkan music, electro, arrangement and composition.
He began the clarinet with Gérard Gosselin at the CRR of Aubervilliers-La Courneuve, then continued his studies there with Alain Damiens. He also perfected his skills in Germany (Frankfurt) with Armin Ziegler.
Giving his first concert as a soloist at the age of sixteen in the virtuoso quintet with string quartet by Karl Maria von Weber - as part of the Festival international du Périgord noir after only eight years of study - he was then a young prodigy.
Samuel Berthod is a laureate of the Radio-France, Thy masterclass (Denmark) and Artist in Residence Program (Finland) foundations, the first musician in twenty-five years.
He performs as a soloist in Europe, Canada and Australia where he lives after the Seychelles, before settling again in France and finally in Sweden.
Among its partners on stage and on record, the Cape Verdean singer Cesaria Evora, the jazzmen Didier Lockwood (violin) and Thierry Eliez (piano), the string quartets Élysée, Diotima, Antares, Nocturnum (UA), Artende (FI ), Weber (SE), Danish string quartet, the Lamoureux Orchestra, the Rivne Chamber Orchestra (UA), the Lviv festival orchestra (UA), the Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra (CZ)...
He gives masterclasses at the Australian national university in Canberra, Belarusian state academy in Minsk, Academies of Odessa, Lviv, Rivne and Chernihiv in Ukraine. He is a professor successively at the Russian Conservatory of Paris Serge Rachmaninov, conservatory of the 10th arrondissement of Paris, conservatories of Voiron (Alps), Mende (Lozère) and since 2023 at the Halmstad School of Arts in Sweden.
