Philippe PORTEJOIE studied saxophone at the CNR de Nantes with Jean-Pierre MAGNAC, then at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris with Daniel DEFFAYET, where he won numerous prizes as a soloist and chamber musician (Léopold Bellan, UFAM International Competition, Paris International Chamber Music Competition, Aix-les Bains International Competition, etc.).
He has performed and recorded with the greatest French and foreign orchestras (Orchestre de Paris, Orchestre National de France, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio-France, Orchestre Colonne, Orchestre d'Ile-de-France, Orchestre de l'Opéra, Orchestre de Toulouse, Orchestre des Pays-de-Loire, Orchestre à cordes de la Garde Républicaine, Janacek Filharmonie Ostrava, PKF Prague Philharmonia , Orquesta Sinfonica de Bogota ... ) with numerous conductors (Jeffrey TATE, Myu-Wung CHUNG, Michel PLASSON, Peter EOTVOS, Luciano BERIO, Marek JANOWSKY, Kurt MAZUR, Marc SOUSTROT, Pierre DERVAUX, François CARRY, Léo HUSSEIN, Sébastien BILLARD, Benjamin GARZIA...). He has performed several times as soloist with orchestra (Orquesta Sinfonica de Bogota, Summer Band Festival de Jeju in South Korea, Bratislava Orchestra, PKF Prague Philharmonia, ...) and chamber music (Guy TOUVRON, Ariane JACOB, Sylvie HUE, Christophe ROY, Xavier PHILLIPS, Romain LELEU, Pascal VIGNERON, Ute GREFRER, Anthony MILLET, Hughes LECLERE, Paul MEYER...).
Since 1986, he has divided his musical activities between the saxophone-piano duo he formed with Frédérique LAGARDE (9 recorded CDs and over 250 concerts to date) and Claude BOLLING's Big Band, where he plays 1st alto saxophone (over 500 concerts and a dozen recorded CDs). As a musician, Philippe PORTEJOIE divides his time between classical music, jazz and, occasionally, film and television (Claude LELOUCH-Hasards et coïncidences, Christophe BARRATIER-Faubourg 36, Corinne TOUZET-Valentine et compagnie, Michel HAZANAVICIUS-OSS 117 Rio ne répond plus, Serge BROMBERG and Ruxandra MEDREA-L'enfer d'Henry-Georges Clouzot, César 2010 for best documentary film...).
He has played with the greatest jazzmen (Phil WOODS, Clark TERRY, Dizzie GILLESPIE, Stéphane GRAPELLI, Didier LOCKWOOD, John FADDIS, John HENDRYX, Benny BAILEY, Roger GUERIN, Martial SOLAL, Gérard BADINI, Claude TISSENDIER, Marcel AZZOLA, Sylvain KASSAP, François CASTIELLO, Stan LAFERRIERE, Michel PASTRE ... ) and performed all over the world (USA, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Mexico, El Salvador, Scotland, Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Poland, Norway, Sweden, Greece, South Korea, Algeria, Morocco, Ivory Coast, Reunion Island, Canada, Taiwan, Latvia, Guadeloupe, Brazil...).
He occasionally works as an arranger, for Claude BOLLING, Michel DELAKIAN, Marcel AZZOLA, the Inédits saxophone quartet, Romain LELEU Xavier PHILLIPS, the Futurum trio, Claude DELANGLE, Ute GREFRER, Michel SUPERA... and is a member of SACEM (composer and arranger). His music is published by Leduc, DelageMusic, Hody Musique, International Musique Diffusion and Delatour. He has also had extensive experience as a saxophone quartet musician with the Gabriel PIERNE , Jean LEDIEU and currently the Quatuor INEDITS and 1846 quartets.
Numerous composers have written for him, in saxophone-piano duo and clarinet trio, the “Paronymes” trio with Sylvie HUE (Roger BOUTRY, Pierre-Max DUBOIS, Lucie ROBERT, Trygve MADSEN, Gérard GASPARIAN, François ROSSE, Roger LERSY, Alain MARGONI, François RAUBER, Igor KATAEV, Richard PHILLIPS, Timothy HAYWARD, Joe MAKHOLM, Jean-Claude HENRY, Anthony GIRARD, Jean-Christophe VILAIN, Stan LAFERRIERE, Dimitri TCHESNOKOV, Olivier CALMEL... ), or as soloist (Concerto for saxophone and trumpet by Trygve MADSEN, Concerto Giocoso by Alain MARGONI, Rhapsodie Fantasmagorique by Olivier CALMEL, which he has just recorded with the Orchestre à cordes de la Garde républicaine conducted by Sébastien BILLARD).
Philippe PORTEJOIE was appointed Professor of Saxophone at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Paris in 1995. Students from all over the world come to study with him.he has also been a full professor at the CRD d'Evry-Centre-Essonne since 1987.he has just been appointed full professor by the City of Paris (September 2014) at the CRR de Paris and the Conservatoire Paul DUKAS (XIIème arrondissement).he also teaches at the Pôle Supérieur de Paris-Boulogne-Billancourt.
He often gives masterclasses in France and abroad (including at the Académie Internationale d'été in Nice, Stage de Labaroche, Rencontres Musicales de Lorraine, Académie Internationale de Flaine, Académie Internationale de Colombes, Conservatorio de Puerto Rico, Javeriana and Nacional Universities of Bogota and Antioquia de Medellin, Janacek Conservatory of Ostrava, Royal Conservatory of Oslo, University of Seoul, University of Taipei, Curitiba Festival, Cafam de Bogotà, Universities of Riga, Utrecht, Warsaw, Bled Festival-Slovenia and Saxophobia-Bratislava). Philippe Portejoie plays exclusively Buffet-Crampon saxophones, using Selmer and Vandoren mouthpieces, and BG ligatures. He is also sponsored by BG ligatures and Buffet Crampon.
